Quick answers
The questions that come up most, answered in fewer words than the manual.
Can I run a laptop off a car's 12 V socket?
Yes, with a USB-C Power Delivery charger or a small inverter, within the socket fuse rating of usually 10 to 15 amps. See the power page.
How long can I work with the engine off?
On the starter battery, not long. Budget 10 to 20 per cent of its capacity and you get about two hours of laptop use at best. A separate power station is the safer route.
Is a steering-wheel tray safe?
Only when parked. It is a desk, not a driving accessory. Never use it while the vehicle is moving.
Is idling while parked legal?
It depends where you are. In England councils can penalise unnecessary idling under the 2002 fixed penalty regulations, and many car parks ban it outright. Check signs and local rules.
Power station or inverter?
A power station for engine-off work, because it brings its own battery. A USB-C charger for engine-on. A small inverter is only for gear that insists on a mains plug.
How do I cut screen glare?
Use a windscreen shade, change the screen angle a few degrees, switch to dark mode and consider a matte screen protector.
Can I take video calls from a car?
Yes, when parked. Use a stable phone mount, a noise-cancelling headset and a dashboard position with decent signal. Wi-Fi calling helps when mobile voice is poor.
What about privacy?
A privacy filter stops neighbours reading your screen. Keep sensitive calls for somewhere quieter, or with the windows closed.
Do the rankings take payment?
No. Items are ranked on fit, safety, power draw, durability and price. Read more on the about page.
